Recording With Your Smartphone:
If you’ve got a phone that is 5 years old or newer, you’ve got a high quality camera right in your hand. This is a powerful video tool.
We recommend that anyone in business get a couple of accessories to help record videos with their phone. Think of it as a smartphone camera bag. These items will help you quickly record any kind of speaking video for your business using your smartphone - even if it’s just you and you have no one to help you film.
It’s important that your camera (phone) be as steady as possible. This will help keep that ‘jitter’ look down and help you look more professional.
There’s a couple of things you can do to help keep the camera steady.
Use A Tripod For Stability: - Versatile tripod / monopod.
- Extends to 67 inches (5’10”) for stand up
- Collapses to 17 inches for desktop use.
- Comes with smartphone mount or can be used with standard cameras.
Have A Friend Hold The Smartphone: - Hold the camera horizontally
- Bring the arms in close against the trunk of the body. This lets you use your whole body as a point of steadiness.
Prop The Phone On A Shelf With Some Books: - Use a shelf that is eye level or slightly lower
- Use additional books to lift the camera to the proper position
- Use a book or other object to support the phone from behind
***Pro Tip*** It’s best to use the camera on the back of your phone, NOT the selfie camera if possible. (The selfie camera isn’t as high quality as the one on the back of your phone).
Lighting Is Everything! You need to have good lighting to record your video. Stand in front of a window or use a desk or table lamp.
Use a window.
- Keep the window in front or slightly off to your left or right side
- NEVER have the window behind you (you will be too dark)
Use a desk or table lamp - A lamp with a shade that lets some light come through can work very well.
- Desk lights work well when bounced off the wall and not directly aimed at you.
Use a video light. - Small, Clip-on ring light for smartphone or laptop
- Fits in your bag / purse for easy access
- Offers daylight, soft white or a mix (so you can match the lights in your room currently)
Good Audio Is Essential.
If you only use the mic on your phone, record in a controlled environment!
- Turn off fans, desktop computers, music, etc
- Keep pets out (dog tags make noise)
- Listen for lawn mowers, blowers, etc that that can ‘bleed’ into the audio you’re recording.
Use an external microphone (recommended) - Compatible with iPhone and Android
- Rechargeable
- Clips on your shirt
- Mic is close to your mouth, reducing the effects of other noises
- Can be mounted on the phone clip with the tripod we recommend.
- Directional mic - reduces the effect of sounds behind the camera
- Can be used with phones, DSLR cameras, and video cameras.
- Can be used with laptop

Recording With Your Computer:
Most of our laptops come with at least a 720p webcam built in. With proper lighting (see below) this can work nicely for filming your BizTizMent.
If you’re using a desktop “all-in-one” type of computer like an iMac, the built-in webcam will work similarly to that in a laptop. If you’re using a more traditional desktop computer or Mac Mini - you’ll need an external webcam. Two that we recommend are listed here.
Webcams: - Logitech (Logi) C-920x
- NexiGo N660P
Each of these webcams has a built-in microphone that can work well in quiet environments (no fan, computer fan, A/C etc). However, a separate microphone is highly recommended (see below).
Lighting Is Key! Use a window for your light
- Natural light from a window can provide great lighting for video.
- Stand with the window in front of you or slightly angled to your right or left.
- Do NOT have the window behind you. This causes you to be in shadow.
Use a desk or table lamp - A lamp with a shade that lets some light come through can work very well.
- Desk lamp/task lights work well when bounced off the wall and not directly aimed at you.
- This light easily clips over the camera (front or back) on your smartphone.
- Easily set for white, natural, or warm light temperature.
- Clips on and off for quick use.
- This is for a longer term solution. Mount on your
- desk and use for video recordings, video meetings
- like Zoom etc.
- Always ready, just flip the switch.
- Light panel | Desk stand | Kit
Clear Sound Is Essential!
If you only use the mic on your phone, record in a controlled environment!
- Turn off fans, desktop computers, music, etc
- Keep pets out (dog tags make noise)
- Listen for lawn mowers, blowers, etc that can ‘bleed’ into the audio you’re recording.
- Remember to hydrate before you get started.
How to Record Your BizTizMent on Your Computer
The easiest way to record a good video on your computer is to use Zoom. We’ve all got it installed and it can help us get a good, clean video. If you don’t have Zoom installed, you can use “Photobooth” on your Mac or “Camera” on your Windows computer.
Some things to consider while using Zoom:
- Set your video settings to “HD”
- Turn off “Touch up my appearance” (we’ll do that for you in editing)
- Turn down the ‘background’ sound option. Set it to low instead of auto. This will help you sound less processed.
- Don’t forget to press record before creating your award-winning elevator pitch.
- A good rule of thumb is to count to three and then begin speaking.
Once you’ve recorded your BizTizMent, save it in a safe place that you can remember. Next, you will receive step three of the process which will include your login details to your portal.
You will be prompted to complete a customer profile and upload your video.
Once complete, your video will be quality inspected, before it heads to production. Remember, if there are any technical problems with the video or audio quality, we’ll send it back to you with some recommendations on how to fix it.
Your video will be live on TV January 1, 2023 on Roku, Amazon Fire, and Apple TV. What a New Year’s treat!
